TLX Gold Breather ..
Membrane and Multi Foil Insulation Combined
The world’s first breathable multi-foil and roofing membrane is now available.
The brighter way to insulate ...
Delivers an air barrier
Yet ...
Top layer is a high performance breather membrane
The core of PET wadding interleaved is with reflective films
All layers are breathable, so moisture passes through, thereby neutralising the risk of condensation, which can lead to dry rot.
Bottom layer reflective film reflects infra-red rays back into living space
European Technical Approval Certificate ATA-11/0011- Valid January 27, 2011 toJanuary 27, 2016
An ETA is a favourable technical assessment of a product’s fitness for an intended uses. It goes further than a BBA (British Board of Agrément) certificate as it tests to demanding European standards. The award, by the Deutsches Institut fûr Bautechnik (DIBt) in Berlin, a member of the EOTA, is valid for five years. Check it out at www.eota.be

Installation
General Instructions
Protective clothing is not required when handling Gold.
Gold must be installed Gold side facing in.
Bare electrical wiring must not be allowed in contact with Gold
PVC coated electrical wiring to normal domestic items such as light fittings may come into contact with Gold.
If electrical cables are surrounded by insulation they may need to be de-rated and guidance should be sought from a qualified electrician.

Installation above rafters
Gold is unrolled above the rafters in horizontal layers parallel to the eaves
The product should be installed from eaves to ridge.
The membrane overlap on the bottom layer of Gold should extend onto a suitable eaves carrier
Additional breather membrane may be used to cover any gaps between Gold and the eaves carrier.
As Gold is unrolled across rafters it is fixed in place with nails or staples of at least 14mm depth
The next layer of Gold must butt-join the previous layer, with the membrane overlap running onto the previous layer, thus ensuring that water runs down the roof without penetrating between layers.
The overlap should be sealed along the entire length using a specified tape.
Install, again from eaves to ridge on the other side of the roof
Carry a layer of Gold over the ridge to overlap on each side of the ridge.
Vertical overlaps should be a minimum of 50mm and securely sealed with the specified tape to ensure a waterproof top layer.
Gold is permanently held in place with 50mm deep counter battens, then tiling battens and tiles are fitted.
Installation below rafters
A strip of roofing underlay is stapled to the wall plate and fed into the eaves to carry any water down and out of the roof structure.
The bottom layer of Gold should be unrolled horizontally below the rafters and stapled to the wall plate, with the membrane overlap taken between the rafters onto the strip of roofing underlay
This is shown in the attached detail.
As Gold is unrolled across rafters it is fixed in place with nails or staples of at least 14mm depth
The next layer of Gold must butt-join the previous layer, with the membrane overlap running above the previous layer, thus ensuring that water runs down the roof without penetrating between layers.
The overlap should be sealed along the entire length using a specified tape.
Install in the same way on the other side of the roof. Cary a layer of Gold under the ridge to overlap on each side of the ridge.
Vertical overlaps should be a minimum of 50mm and securely sealed with the specified tape to ensure an airtight seal.
Gold is permanently held in place with 50mm deep counter battens, then plasterboard is fitted.
Achieving better U-Values
U-values lower than those given in the examples may be achieved by using a second layer of Gold, or a greater thickness of additional insulation.
Vapour Control and Ventilation
A vapour control layer is not required for any of the recommended solutions, using breathable products prevents trapping of water vapour.
Ventilation of the space between the membrane and the outer roof covering is not required for air-open coverings such as clay or concrete tiles and natural slate
Sealed roof coverings require additional ventilation of this space.
When installed on the underside of the rafters, below a traditional non-breathable roofing felt, the rafter space should be ventilated.
If in any doubt about possible harmful condensation, contact Web Dynamics Ltd for guidance.
Cutting
Gold can be cut using a sharp knife with the Gold resting on a board, or with scissors
Where Gold has been cut and the layers are exposed, the cut edge should be taped together.
Pieces which have been cut should be stapled and battened as soon as possible, and should not be left only partially secured overnight.
Awkward shapes (such as triangular pieces for dormer cheeks) should be taped up, stapled and battened immediately.
Any tears or holes should be repaired with the specified tape
Cutting of the membrane layer should be kept to minimum and should be repaired by covering with second layer of breathable membrane.
Taping
It is important that Gold is securely taped at the overlap sand junctions with walls or windows
Henkel All-Purpose Duck tape is recommended as a suitable tape
Other tapes should not be used unless they have been shown to have equivalent bonding to Duck tape.
Gold must always be taped together when surfaces are clean and dry.
Air Layers
Unventilated air layers form an important part of the Gold Insulation System
If the air spaces are omitted, whilst there is no danger of condensation, the overall thermal performance of the structure will decrease, and the U value will be higher
Additional insulation may be needed to achieve the desired U value for the roof.
Additional Insulation
Install additional insulation according to the manufacturers’ instructions.
Provide for air gaps between additional insulation and Gold as instructed.
Storage
Gold rolls must be stored on a flat dry surface, protected from the weather and direct sunlight.
Make sure when installing TLX Gold that it does not come into contact with heat sources above 80°C.
