Product Information

YBS Breather Foil FR - Insulating Fire Retardant Breather Venting Membrane for Timber-Frame Construction

Specially developed for use in timber-frame and modular building construction, Breather-Foil FR can greatly increase the U-value of the timber-frame wall.
Whether pre-fabricated or assembled on site, Breather-Foil FR can afford the designer and contractor maximum flexibility when detailing timber-frame walls, without the expense of thicker timber frames or higher priced materials.
The Breather-Foil FR timber-framed wall system creates a wind-tight, draught-free, weather-sealed, yet vapour-permeable enclosure, when used in conjunction with external cladding, such as tile-hanging, masonry or weather-boarding.
Breather Foil FR is delivered in rolls packed in a protective sealed bag and should include product name, dimensions, the BDA Agrément number BAW 09-311 and identification mark

Benefits

The Breather-Foil FR timber-frame wall system also offers the following installation benefits:
Breather-Foil FR protects the timber frame components during construction

Condensation and water penetration risk

Walls incorporating the product will adequately limit the risk of interstitial condensation when designed in accordance with the BDA Agrément and installed in accordance with BDA Agrément Nr. BAW 09-312 Breather-Foil FR (phase: installation, ref.2)
Breather-Foil FR presents no significant risk of water penetration provided that masonry cavity walls are designed and constructed to the requirements of BS 5628 Part 3 (ref.6) to prevent moisture penetration, that discontinuous cladding has appropriate laps and due attention is made of the building exposure rating. Where the clear cavity, after the installation of Breather-Foil FR, exceeds 50 mm the product can be used in any exposure zone
it is essential that cavity walls incorporating the product in the cavity are designed in such a way that they contain the normal precautions against moisture ingress
specifically the continuity of vapour control layers must be maintained at laps and joints
all sorts of perforations should be kept to a minimum and well be sealed
Breather-Foil FR does not absorb water by capillarity. Where Breather-Foil FR bridges dpc level, water is not transferred from the ground to the construction.

Behaviour in relation to fire

Breather-Foil FR will not impair the fire resistance performance of the walls.
Since the insulation is combustible it must be adequately separated from: heat producing appliances, incinerators, hearths, ductwork for high temperature gases, flues, chimneys and fire places or recesses (see ref.3)
when tested to BS 476 Part 7 Surface spread of flame Breather-Foil FR is designated Class 1.6.

Durability

The product is stable, rot-proof and durable and will remain effective as an insulant and vapour open cavity rain barrier for the life of the building in which it is installed. There is no risk for moth or beetle infestation.

General

Installation of Breather-Foil FR and additional products should be in accordance with the Certificate holder’s instructions and current good building practice
During installation care must be taken to avoid damaging of the product. Should damage occur, holes in the product should be repaired with suitable tape, as provided by the Certificate holder
The product should be attached to the inner leaf timber frame sheathing by using staples or nails of at least 14 mm length and secured with wall ties
Breather-Foil FR must be applied with the foil face of the bubble film facing outwards into the cavity, ensuring 75 mm horizontal overlaps are positioned to create a waterproofing lap
When the product is cut to fit around openings or connections, gaps must be minimized; any exposed cut edges should be sealed with suitable tape, as provided by the Certificate holder
The outer leaf must be built ensuring that the designed minimum clear cavity is maintained. After raising each masonry section, loose mortar must be cleaned from the insulation, not allowing mortar to fall into the cavity
At external and internal corners Breather-Foil FR should be laid with a minimum 150 mm overlap. It should be wrapped around the corner and the overlap secured with staples
At ground level Breather-Foil FR must extend below the level of internal flooring insulation. The installation of Breather-Foil FR should be carried out to the highest level of each wall
During construction Breather-Foil FR will provide a temporary rain screen, but the external cladding should be completed as soon as possible. In exposed conditions the vertical laps must be secured with battens

Delivery and site handling

The product is delivered to site in rolls packed in a protective bag sealed with a plastic tie. Fitting instructions are placed in the bag
The rolls should be stored in clean, dry conditions, not exposed to sunlight
The product must be protected from being dropped or crushed by objects. Care must be exercised when storing large quantities on site
The product must not be exposed to open flame or other ignition sources and must be stored away from flammable material such as paint and solvents
To ensure maximum performance of the product when installed, on site precautions must be taken to protect it from mud and dirt.3.

Maintenance and repair

Once installed, the product does not require any maintenance for the design life of the building, provided that it remains installed strictly in accordance with the requirements of the BDA Agrément and of the manufacturer

Installation

The timber framework is to be constructed with the sheathing board in position.
Breather-Foil FR is rolled out into position and then stapled to the sheathing board.
An overlap of 200mm must be allowed at the lower edge of the panel. This is to allow for coverage of the lower sole plate or upper floor joists.
An overlap of 150mm must be allowed at the right hand edge of the panel. This is to allow for coverage and sealing of the vertical joint on assembled panels.
The end overlap and the bottom overlap should not be stapled, but left loose for site fixing.
All mid panel horizontal joints have an overlap of 75mm.
The upper layer must overlap the lower layer to allow any penetrating water to be dispersed to a safe outlet.
These horizontal laps are to be left open to allow the panels to breathe.
The location of the timber studs should now be highlighted with indelible ink to allow for future accurate positioning of the wall ties.
Any window and door openings are to be cut out with the Breather-Foil FR and can now be turned inside the opening and fixed to the stud work or cut flush to the edges of the opening.
Stacking/Transport
Stack and strap the panels, for transport, as normal. The bubbles compress slightly under load but DO NOT burst. They will reform once the panel is erected. The smooth surface of BF-FR means the timber panels slide off each other resulting in less damage.
Site Work
Panels are erected in to position with the overlaps to the bottom and to the right (looking from outside). After fixing the panels, the vertical overlaps are stapled. YBS Breather-Foil FR wall ties are fixed along the 'marked' vertical stud line as the external brick wall is built. The anti-glare membrane should be peeled off over the ties as the brick work progresses.
Site Work Exterior
If left exposed use edge battens fixed all around the perimeter to help prevent wind lifting and damaging the Breather-Foil FR in extreme conditions.

Condensation Risk

Further to calculating the thermal insulation requirements through a cavity wall, a check should be made for predicting the risk of condensation within the structure.
This should be carried out using the method described in BS5250:1999.
